Week 1- Social Media (Matt Tallman)

My idea for the entrepreneurship project is a web page for elder people, an untaped market on the web (specifically in the upstate region.) This page puts all the essentials of the internet in one place. Being from a different generation they do not know how to work the internet like we do. So I am going to simplify the process for them, I will have email, taxes, news (catered to there interests) and other troubling processes the elders struggle with online in one simple and easy web page. They will be able to easily maneuver through this site and accomplish things on the web that would have used to take them hours. This page may have a social media aspect to it but I do not want it to grouped in with a page like Facebook or twitter because my idea has to do simply with accessibility.

  1. Your idea seems very convenient. I know my grandfather struggles with accessing all the different components of the internet because it's too complicated for him. The one downfall of this idea I find is you would have to be very careful with what is displayed and how it is displayed. I feel it would be very easy for someone to maybe mix up things like bills and buying products. If you made a distinct difference among them, it would be beneficial so that those who use this system would not mix them up.

  2. As i read this i just think about how my grandmother uses her computers. I think that the elderly are very interested in using the technology, and some of them are getting more and more comfortable with it, but for the most part it is still this daunting thing out there that they are not really a part of. If you could consolidate all of these resources and ease an elderly person into the computing era, they would definitely be willing to pay for a service like that.

  3. I immediately thought of how I am constantly teaching my grandma how to use different programs on her computer. This would be very comprehensive, yet consolidated program. I think this population would definitely invest in this if they knew that they could easily navigate on the computer.

  4. This is a very interesting and useful idea. As mentioned above, my parents and grandparents always struggle with using certain aspects of the internet, thus forcing me or my brother to help them make videos, send a picture on facebook, or taking a picture on the webcam. This site will be helpful as to providing various useful tutorials for the elderly, and you will definitely get a large demographic, even though it might seem selective.
One tip is that you must be very organized with your content of tutorials. THere is just so much to learn about how to use the internet and the computer itself that the elderly will end up getting lost on your site itself. Organization and the design of your website is key. I wish you the best of luck!

  5. This is a different ideal that you have came up with. Just because of your target client, you dont see older people in the 60's being targeted for technology. I would like to see more older people learn how to use technology, so they can still have some sense of independence. this site will help many of people.

  6. Wow this is an awesome idea! I can honestly see this idea becoming a reality, and on top of that, I can actually see people using this. As other commentators have mentioned above, my grandparents are very unskilled when it comes to computer and internet usage, and it can be quite a pain trying to patiently explain things simply to them. A program that would include organized tutorials and simple instructions that will help elderly people successfully navigate their computers would be very helpful and useful. This is an awesome idea and I fully and completely support it! Good luck!

  7. This would be great for my computer illiterate parents. My parents don't know anything about the computer but how to turn it on and off. I would love to see how this develops.
